In the presented photo we can see a man who we will refer to as French wearing glasses waving what can only be described as a “makeshift flag” standing with one leg on a box in what looks to be a defiant surrender as the French are known to do but what's make us able to see that we can start by dissecting the flag as we can see it has multiple textures and marks on the grip of the flag it looks torn weathered and stappled on almost while the French man also looks weathered to some degree with his roughed up hair and un tucked shirt his aviators makes it look like he's more rebellious and mysterious as it can be seen as a sign of disrespect by some and covers his eyes to make him seem more intimidating.
What's a real stand out in this photo is the white flag itself it immediately draws the viewer's eye and grabs their attention it also goes on to help dictate the meaning of the of the photo as without it the photo would be a French man standing there menacingly with no real rhyme of purpose the flag helps the photo look aesthetically pleasing and dictate the overall message of the photo that is of the French stereotype of surrender.
In this photo the use of rule of thirds is very present and can be seen with how the image focuses on the body of the French man you can see the lines matching up in the middle over his arms and mouth making him unequivocally the center piece of the photo while he doesn’t convey the meaning which creates a really interesting piece to kind of analyze and look at as it is a symmetrical image but has this idea changing up with the positioning of things whilst keeping its composition in tact.
We can also see implied movements in the image through the way the arm is bent the crinkles in the shirt acting as lines in the image to display to us that his arm could swing the other way at any moment to wave the flag creating an impressive photo making it seem like it’s a pause in time a moment to be remembered and what is most likely in a vertical way to help the convey the idea of aspiration or longing of new ideals.
The use of contrast can be seen in the images black and white color scheme to help make the image seem older and more rustic, but it also helps puts into a new context as the use of darker blacks can be help make the image look greyer and help tell and communicate a story to the viewer.
Of course, humor can be seen in this image as it is directly making fun and or light of a French stereotype that of them always surrendering seen in the flag and in the way the man is called a “French man” as it elicits a response from the audience.
